Loonie, what have you done for me lately?

You've by now tracked the rise in the dollar (trading at 93.36 cents US this morning). As bullist analysts are calling for parity by year's end, consumers may be hurting for a shopping trip down south to take advantage of the mighty loonie.

But if you're looking to capitalize on home ground, The Financial Post's
Jacqueline Thorpe and Hollie Shaw have some bad news for you:

The 50% rise in the currency in the past five years has brought little joy at the till for the average consumer.

Some examples:

After converting the Canadian price into U.S. dollars, the gap between Canadian and U.S. prices still averaged 8%. Canadians pay 10% more for an Economist magazine and 20% more for a sample of five birthday cards.

The 85th annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

The 85th annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is something of an American institution in the same way that the Daytona and Indianapolis events are part of USA racing folklore. BMW Motorrad is returning to this years race which takes place on Saturday 21July with two missions: to win the event outright and to break the outright speed record for the climb up the famous hill. And in order to achieve this, BMW Motorrad Motorsport will be fielding a team of four American riders and will also be showcasing the new HP2 Megamoto machine in this historic and arduous race.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a long-standing tradition in Colorado Springs and the second oldest motorsport event in the United States. The hill climb itself started in 1916 and is run on a 12.4-mile course that begins at 9,197 feet and rises to 14,100 feet up a tight twisty Colorado Rockies mountain road with numerous tight hairpins.

Too Much CAFE Makes Cars Smaller, More Expensive: Doron Levin

And don't blame Detroit for buying advertisements designed to scare motorists over talk about adopting tougher mileage standards.

From the automakers' perspective, tighter fuel-efficiency rules will force them to build smaller cars and trucks, perhaps tipping a financially shaky industry over the brink.

If federal Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, or CAFE, rise anything like the 4 percent a year over the next 10 or 15 years outlined in a U.S. Senate bill, pickup trucks, minivans and sport utility vehicles might become scarce or disappear from America's highways. The CAFE for cars and trucks now is a combined average of about 25 miles per gallon; that would rise to 35 miles per gallon by 2020, with more increases through 2030.

US Open Notebook: Don鈥檛 cry for Argentina

Just weeks removed from Eduardo Romero's back-to-back runner-up finishes on the Champions Tour, the man he encouraged to pick up the game at the age of 15, Angel Cabrera, is atop the sport.Cabrera's cool-as-can-be round of 1-under 69 gave him a 5-over 285 total on Sunday at the 107th U.S. Open, and marked his first PGA Tour victory, the high point of a pro career that began in 1990.Romero so believed in Cabrera years ago that when Cabrera failed to qualify for the European Tour three times, Romero underwrote his expenses in 1995.Finally, Cabrera joined the European Tour in 1996 – and has won three times there – including the 2005 BMW Championship. He didn't join the PGA Tour until 2003, and led the 2004 U.S. Open after one round. But it wasn't until this year that the 37-year-old – nicknamed "Pato " – was finally able to break through on the biggest of stages.Cabrera becomes the first Argentinean winner of the U.S.

Used Convertible Values: Volkswagen Chases Ferrari For Top Spot

June 1, 2007 Buying an set of wheels is an emotional decision but wed always suggest that a look through the residual value figures might help to point you towards a more rational emotional decision. The latest figures from EurotaxGlasss in the UK are a case in point. EurotaxGlasss has found that a number of volume-brand drop-tops retain a far greater proportion of their value than prestige-brand models from the likes of BMW, Lexus and Maserati. While the Ferrari F430 Spider holds onto its value better than any other 12-month-old convertible on sale in the UK (a typical 06-plate example retaining 97 per cent of its original list price as a trade value), hot on its heels is the rather more humble Volkswagen Eos (at 94 per cent retained value in 2.0 TDI Sport guise). Read on for the top 20 listing.

NASA Nationals Honda Challenge

The National Auto Sport Association's Honda Challenge series returned to Honda's recognized home circuit in North America, the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, to hold its official inaugural national championship. (Many will recall an "unofficial" version of the runoffs at the same circuit in 2004). Well over 40 cars were in the HC field, with 15 in the cream-of-the-crop H1 class and nearly 20 in H4. The numbers guaranteed a fierce battle for both categories.

The competition format included a hot-lap qualifying session and qualifying race on Friday and another qualifying race on Saturday. Those results were averaged out to determine starting positions for Sunday's championship contest.

Chess is back!

Undoubtedly, the Oasis Cafe has laid the foundation for revitalizing chess in Guyana by providing a venue for two tournaments in January and February.

Chess, it seems, has caught the train to desination 'Visibility,' emerging successfully from the dark shadows of obscurity.

This last tournament was played two Saturdays ago and the newly-acquired chess clocks were used officially for the first time. And for the first time too in many years, a chess tournament was conducted under international timekeeping conditions.

And what did we see? We saw games that were rich in theory. We saw games rich with sacrifices. We saw deep combinations on the chessboard, and surprisingly, few games ended in draws. Draws, apparently, were frowned upon.

One ambitious chess player informed me that we would battle to the death.

A new Xbox hero

Screen Play didn't receive $350 worth of beer in the mail last week, but I was impressed by Microsoft's shrewd PR in sending an Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero II to tempt me away from the PS3. It worked.

In over 15 years of writing about interactive entertainment, it's the first time I can remember a console manufacturer sending me a third-party game. It highlights the importance of the franchise, and that Microsoft is fully aware of the need to widen 360's audience quick smart.

Screen Play couldn't possibly recommend splashing out for a 360 instead of a PS2 just to play the game (or buying it again if you already own the PS2 version). There are few memorable standouts in the 10 Xbox 360 exclusive tracks (despite the long-awaited addition of Iron Maiden) and there's also not a huge visual leap (nor would it matter if there was).

Budget fails the future and compassion tests

If you won the lottery tomorrow you'd want to spend a bit and help out your friends and family; but if you have any sense you'd invest the rest for your future.

The Howard Government is riding on the back of the greatest resources boom Australia has seen - we have never had higher prices for our coal and minerals. Saul Eslake, the ANZ Bank's chief economist, calculates that the mining boom has delivered a budget windfall of $398 billion over nine years.

It's perfectly right to return some of those enormous tax revenues to the taxpayers who have created them, but it's also important to invest for the future.

This budget is a missed opportunity when it comes to lifting Australian productivity. The Government hasn't invested seriously in education or in broadband and the budget papers show productivity growth will fall from the end of next year.

Top auto brands foray into second hand car market

There has been a great deal of noise about some of the leading players of Indian industry entering the retail market. What seems to have gone relatively unnoticed is the entry of the top names of the automobile sector into the second hand car market. Starting from scratch only a few years ago, the big boys have already cornered 22 per cent of this Rs 10,000 crore market, which was earlier completely unorganised.

Maruti sold 84,500 pre-owned cars in the financial year 2006-07, earning revenues of Rs. 1,483 crore. The company's pre-owned car business has been doubling every year for the past three years. Maruti entered the use car business in 2000 as a part of its strategy to be the 'end-to-end' player in the car industry.

Arch rival Hyundai Motor India was a relative latecomer, entering the business only in April 2006.

Forex Daily Technical Report Euro Strengthens against Dollar and ...

Euro strengthens against dollar and yen ahead of the highly anticipated ECB rate decision and press conference today. It's widely expected that ECB will raise rate by 25bps to 3.75% today after Trichet's signal with the usage of "vigilance' in last meeting. While ECB is still expected to continue tightening this year, the opinion on the timing is divided and hence, focus of the markets will again be on the following press conference on clues on timing of next hike. The below 2% target inflation and persistently strong money supply growth have been the major topics in the market on forecasting ECB's next moves. Today's 2008 inflation forecast will be closely watched and should solve part of the puzzle. Meanwhile, BoE is expected to keep rates unchanged at 5.25% and will likely be a non-event.

CURRENCIES: Euro Lower After Trichet; Yen Slumps As Carry Back In ...

The euro fell against the dollar on Thursday after the European Central Bank hiked its key interest rate by a quarter percentage point to 3.75% as expected and said rates are now "moderate" rather than "low." Jean-Claude Trichet, President of the Frankfurt-based ECB, which sets interest-rate policies in the 13 countries that use the euro, said rates remain "accommodative" and that the central bank will "very closely" monitor price developments, an indication that a rate hike in the next quarter is likely. But Trichet did make one concession, saying that rates are now "moderate." He added that he wasn't preparing markets for a "restrictive" policy. "Trichet opted for a less hawkish tone when he said that interest rates are now moderate rather than low," said Kathy Lien, chief strategist at DailyFX.com.

Consistently Cheap Car Insurance

As every Londoner knows, the way to cross the road is to put your head down, look neither left nor right, and cross. The cars will stop for you. (They're almost stationary already anyway.) I'm still alive so it must work, I reckon!

Other than the resultant occasional bruises and frequent wild tooting on my mad journeys to and from work, my (sometimes painful) relationship with cars doesn't go beyond the analysis of car finances. However, when I worked in the general insurance industry I didn't put my head down; I looked around a lot to see what was going on. I still do that now. Here are the two things that have most caught my attention this year.

1. The cost of car insurance

The cost of car insurance has been steadily falling for three years, thanks to an incredibly competitive market.

Appeal of smaller cars grows

You've seen them on Canadian streets for years in ever-growing numbers -- compact cars like the Honda Civic and Mazda3, subcompacts like the Toyota Echo hatchback, and baby-SUVs like Ford's Escape. Now the newest of those mite-sized vehicles are the majority.

For the first time since car dealers opened for business in Canada, more than half of all retail buyers bought a small, fuel efficient vehicle last year, new research shows.

The data, compiled by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, suggests most Canadians are already making the kind of auto-buying choices that will reduce their footprint on the environment. And it means that if the federal and provincial governments really want to make a difference to reduce vehicle emissions, they should focus on getting older beaters off the road instead of targeting new cars and trucks, the consultancy says.

According to a report by AMR Research in September 2006, the aftermarket service represent 24% of revenue and 40-80% of profit to a manufacturer, however only a minority of companies have recognised the strategic importance and potential for differentiation by investing in the product after-market.

ServiceBench customer, retail giant Sears did, however, recognise the potential benefits of introducing a service management solution to handle their huge volume of after-sales warranties.

Gonzales' hold on job uncertain

WASHINGTON - Attorney General Alberto Gonzales' hold on his job grew more uncertain Monday as the Senate debated removing his authority to unilaterally name U.S. attorneys and the White House said it merely hoped he would survive the tumult.

Asked if Gonzales had contained the political damage from the firing of eight federal prosecutors, White House spokesman Tony Snow said, "I don't know."

Snow declined to predict how long Gonzales would stay in his job but reiterated President Bush's support of him.

"No one's prophetic enough to know what the next 21 months hold," Snow said. "We hope he stays."

The Justice Department also planned to turn over to Congress late Monday a couple of thousand pages of new documents related to the firings.

White House counselor Dan Bartlett said that Bush had full confidence in Gonzales and that the attorney general had not offered to resign.

"The same militiamen who used to raid our areas in the past are now conducting the security crackdown, using this as a chance to attack us further," Jabouri said.Later the same night, security forces raided a compound containing the homes of 110 university professors and their families. Professor Hameed al-Aathami described what happened: "They dragged us out of our beds as we slept with our wives and children, took us outside, bound our hands and blindfolded us. They beat, cursed and insulted us."Dr Salah Bidayat, the dean of the school of law, fired two shots from his licensed gun in the air to get the soldiers attention.

The Bargain Hunter

Checking in at this Albany warehouse sale for home decorating fabric is like going on safari for the ultimate bargain. The array reflects recent color and design trends, the classic and traditional, and some fabrics so old they've developed retro status. Prices are low to clear out many years' worth of inventory from this custom furniture manufacturer before it remodels the building and reorients the business. Fabric will be $1 to $5 a yard when bought by the roll.

The caveats: Small rolls with 2 to 8 yards of fabric will be sold as is -- that is, you take it all for one price, from $2 to $15 per roll. Larger rolls involve two prices. To get the lowest price you must buy a minimum of 20 yards. Buy less and you'll pay about double.

An estimated 1.1 million children between ages 12 and 17 use inhalants to get high and a higher percentage of girls than boys are huffing household products and starting younger than their male counterparts. In 2005, almost five percent of girls used inhalants in the past year, while 4.2 percent of boys reported huffing.

Ex-soldier plans an armed forces museum in Hoover

Former soldier and retired businessman Henry H. Cobb Jr. plans to fulfill a long-held dream by transforming part of a Hoover office complex into a venue to honor veterans and others who served in all branches of the U.S. armed forces.

Commercial real estate firm Graham & Co. Inc. recently sold a building in its Hoover Business Park on Lorna Ridge Drive to the Armed Forces Museum of Alabama, led by Cobb, a former adjutant general for the Alabama National Guard.

He plans an interactive museum, with maps, books and videos, as well as comfortable chairs for people to sit down, spend time and learn more about U.S. wars and those who fought in them.

Memorabilia also will be a part of the museum, including war-era model airplanes and Cobb's personal collection of knives.

Booming mining's no longer the pits

EVERY time Sue Gogilis starts her shift driving the company truck she gives her steering wheel a good rub with a few disinfectant wipes.

Gogilis, a 34-year-old mother of two, was a dental assistant until last May. Now she drives a mammoth dump truck at one of Rio Tinto's iron ore mines, hauling 230 tonnes of rock and dirt across the scorching Pilbara region in Australia's outback.

"They need the bodies," she said. "And so if there's a body, they don't care if it's male or female as long as it can drive the truck."

From the pits of Australia to the coalfields of Wyoming, mining companies like Rio Tinto are hunting for people to address a dire shortage of workers. A decade ago, with prices slumping, the sense of mining as a sunset industry left it with a workforce with grey hair under its hard hats.

In the heartfelt nomination, Hamilton's son wrote that she taught him "the most important thing you will ever have is family, that no matter what, family is the thing that will never leave you."

Marcus, the second-runner up, was recognized for battling through kidney failure and rheumatoid arthritis to successfully raise her three adopted children. In her nomination letter, Marcus was described as always putting other's needs before her own.

"Taking about 80 pills a day to prevent infection," the letter read, "never stopped her from taking us to Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure… She's living proof of what she has taught her children our whole lives: just because she's disabled doesn't mean she's unable."

Al-Qaida Suspect Says He Beheaded Daniel Pearl

The alleged al-Qaida mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, boasted of being personally responsible for decapitating the US journalist Daniel Pearl five years ago, in a new transcript released by the Pentagon yesterday. The claim comes on top of 30 other al-Qaida operations he said he been involved in.

Mohammed, 42, a Pakistani brought up in Kuwait, claimed he was the shadowy figure shown in a video of the beheading of the Wall Street Journal reporter. "I decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew, Daniel Pearl, in the city of Karachi, Pakistan," the transcript quotes him as saying.

A Pentagon spokesman, Bryan Whitman, said the passage was withheld from 26 pages of his "confession" released on Wednesday to allow time to inform Pearl's wife, Mariane.

Can old rockers share the wealth?

To some, heritage rock acts like Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney and the Rolling Stones are the saviors of the touring industry. They are the cornerstones of the live-music economy because of their appeal to the mammoth and powerful boomer population, lazy record executives and radio programmers out for the easy sell. These acts pack arenas consistently with above-average ticket prices, and they annually top the year- end grosses as the most successful and powerful artists to hit the road.

But others see these rockers as part of a greater problem, one that threatens the very foundation of rock 'n' roll. If you're shelling out $29.50-$95 .

Bus fleet getting newer, greener

The Lowell Regional Transit Authority continues to upgrade its fleet, which is getting greener every day. This month the authority rolled out seven new buses, adding to the 12 new buses it brought online last year.

The latest acquisitions, seven 35-foot buses, were purchased from Gillig Corp. of Hayward, Calif. They seat 32, burn low-sulfur diesel fuel, and accommodate wheelchairs. "They're state-of-the-art," said the transit authority's executive director, James Scanlan, last week.

Eighty percent of the cost of each $285,000 bus was paid for with grants from the federal government. The state paid for the remaining 20 percent.

With five new buses scheduled to join next year, the transit authority will have replaced more than half its fleet of 45 buses in a few years.

Workers doubt health info from employers

The millions of dollars and countless hours employers spend on health and wellness campaigns may be falling on deaf - and distrusting - ears, according a survey released today by J.D. Power and Associates.

The firm, generally known for its auto rankings, released today its first-ever National Health Insurance Plan Satisfaction Study, which surveyed 10,552 consumers on their satisfaction with their health plans.

Among the questions asked: Which of the following do you trust the most when it comes to advice about how to stay healthy and how to get the best healthcare? Not surprisingly, a large majority cite their doctors, with 70% naming their primary care physician and 31% saying the specialist they see the most. However, just 2% trust employers most -- well behind online health articles (22%), their health plan (12%), the government (8%) and even none of the above (6%).

Shared equity loans expensive way to buy

THE new shared equity mortgage allows borrowers to buy property they traditionally couldn't afford – but this privilege isn't cheap, particularly if house prices jump.

The new product has sparked fears it will add to the growth in house prices because of the extra flow of liquidity to the market.

The loan has been launched as an equity finance mortgage (EFM) and is issued by Adelaide Bank and funded by Rismark International.

Brian Jones, managing director of non-bank lender Homeloans, which recently wrote the country's first EFM loan in Perth, said the product was designed to overcome poor home affordability in NSW and Victoria.

"It's had that original foundation in that there was a problem with, particularly younger people and affordability in high-value markets, possibly having to move away from family and look for employment elsewhere rather than having free access to the markets and the geography that they were accustomed to," he said.

Survey: Property Sales, Enquiries Increase

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Bernama) -- A survey by Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association (REHDA) shows that property sales and enquiries rose following the government's liberalisation measures to stimulate foreign ownership and investment in properties. "The survey, conducted between Apr 21 and May 8 this year, showed an 18 percent increase in property sales and 22 percent rise in enquiries," REHDA deputy president, Datuk Michael Yam Kong Choy, said at a media briefing to release the survey result. He said the measures included exemption of real property gains tax (RPGT), removal of the limit of the number of property loans allowed for non-residents and the lifting of Foreign Investment Committee approval. "Of the incentives, respondents credited the blanket exemption of the RPGT as the main contributor of improved sales.

New or used? Peace of mind is a crucial factor

It's hard to remember when there was a better time to consider a used car instead of a new one.

The record number of new cars and trucks sold in recent years -- fueled largely by extremely attractive rebates and low- or no-interest financing -- has created an overabundance of used cars. That gives the used-car shopper a lot of choice.

The flooded market also means depressed prices on used cars -- bad news for new-car buyers trading in their old models, but good news for bargain-hunting used-car shoppers.

Furthermore, an increasing number of certified pre-owned car plans have cropped to provide consumers with peace of mind when it comes to buying a used car.

In the end, the decision to buy new or to buy used boils down to what you can afford and what will give you peace of mind.

Top sport-shoe maker aims to double China outlets

HONG KONG: Yue Yuen Industrial (Holdings), the top maker of shoes for Nike Inc and other footwear brands, plans to more than double its network of Chinese outlets within two years, accelerating a retail foray.

The firm moves the shoes that it makes via 1450 outlets sprinkled across the country but it now aims to raise that total to 3000 within two years, managing director David Tsai told reporters after a shareholders' meeting on Thursday.

It aimed to own two-thirds of those new stores and retail counters, the executive added.

Yue Yuen, which operates a sprawling production web covering China, Vietnam and Indonesia, is moving increasingly away from fabricating shoes for the likes of Nike and Adidas toward wholesale and retail.

That division accounted for 8.3 per cent of nearly $US3.7 billion ($NZ5.3 billion) in revenue in the year ended September 30, up from 5.4 per cent the previous year.

More Central Banks diversify away from the US Dollar- Forex Crises ...

For years now we have warned of tsunami like capital waves crossing the globe bringing financial drama with it. We have pointed to the structural problems that could give rise to the damage these waves will cause. We have warned of the Central Bank's moves away from the U.S.$. We have also warned of the damage the Trade deficit is doing to the U.S. We have also warned of global foreign exchange and rates crises.

We coined the expression "Live now, Pay later" syndrome that has been all-pervasive in the U.S.A. Add this to the "so far, so good" attitude and what happened this week in global markets has been long overdue. It signals that globalization and the free flow of capital across this globe of managed foreign exchange rates, plus the interdependency of global economies will undermine all paper currencies to some extent.

Hybrid Cars Helping To Drive Down Insurance Costs

(NAPSI)-−Hybrid vehicles may help to save more than the environment. They may also mean savings for drivers when it comes to auto insurance. For example, on the heels of recently signed legislation aimed at reducing California's greenhouse emissions by 25 percent by the year 2020, one insurance company has introduced a program to help support that goal. California hybrid owners can now take advantage of a 10 percent discount on auto insurance offered by Travelers. Experts say any vehicle is considered a hybrid when it combines two or more sources of power. Hybrid cars run off a rechargeable battery and gasoline. The company is the first to offer a discount to hybrid drivers on a national level and has been steadily rolling out the discount state by state. It has recently made the discount available in New York, Maryland, Florida, Washington and Texas, bringing the total number of states in which the discount is offered to 42, in addition to the District of Columbia.

Marine's mother makes personalized cards

WACO, Texas -- Every holiday, Reba Webster Hollingsworth sends out nearly 2,000 handmade, personalized greeting cards to strangers across the globe.

Time-consuming, yes. But the 36-year-old Waco legal assistant says it's the least she can do.

She shows her support for the troops with the paper, markers and stamps those cards are made from.

To Hollingsworth, the cards mean a heck of a lot more than a magnetic ribbon on the back of her Ford saying she supports the troops.

And she'll tell you that defiantly.

"I choose to show my pride in ways that are beneficial to those who protect us and our freedoms," she said.

Hollingsworth's efforts may prove more important than ever with the war in Iraq entering its fifth year this week.

Pakistan IT Jobs Boom: Rozee.pk Becomes Top Jobs Marketplace

Los Angeles, CA (FV Newswire) - Rozee.pk, the top jobs portal of Pakistan has seen an 800% growth in traffic over the past one year to become one of the most visited sites in Pakistan. With the massive global demand for IT man power and the move of multinationals to Pakistan as an "offshore destination", the prospects for IT professionals have never been better. Pakistan's strong growth rate, infrastructure development and formal IT policy has increased domestic demand as well. Fortunately for the employers, Pakistan's large computer literate, English speaking population is a steady source of engineers. Traditionally, there was a lot of distortion in the Pakistan job market place due to inefficiencies. The traditional media such as newspapers could not cope with the rapid paced jobs market and therefore caused unnecessary churn.

The shoe and apparel giant plans to start introducing personalized uniforms to all its NCAA-Nike partner schools beginning next fall.

Cashback is a sweet, melancholy comedy for rueful romantics that should have landed here to honour St. Valentine. But we'll happily take it in the name of St. Patrick.

This expanded feature-length version of the 2006 Oscar-nominated short film by hugely talented young British writer-director Sean Ellis deals with the unhappy consequences of being dumped by a girlfriend.

The question asked is, What is love, anyway? And while we're at it, What is beauty? As formulated by shoe-gazing art student Ben Willis (appealing Sean Biggerstaff, the Quidditch captain in the first two Harry Potter films), there is no easy answer.

Ben is in pain. One day he's thick as thieves with Suzy (Michelle Ryan). The next, she's ditched him for a bigger man on campus. Because he's a sensitive artist, he takes the news like a shaft to the heart. Buy-in-Home.
